The Weekly Nerd 16

Welcome to Friday Saturday (for this week), where nerds congregate to receive amazing news and bits from the Internet.

First… some trailers as normal.

A good buddy-cop comedy is exactly what the doctor ordered. We can hope that the sequel manages the same laughs as the first one.

This trailer is a bit darker than what I normally add in here, but I really liked the development in the trailer. They give a lot of the movie away in my opinion, but it is well paced and intriguing.

… and lastly, I have something for you Whovians out there. Enjoy!

Now… On to pictures. Entertainment Weekly dropped a new issue with lots of new Star Wars: The Force Awakens photos.  Enjoy the wonders

In some more Star Wars news, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy discussed some overall details about the Han Solo anthology film.

“There’s got to be a reason for [the stand-alone film] to be. And obviously the thing that Star Wars has always done so well is it doesn’t spend a lot of time [explaining] the stories that have come before. We don’t want to do that either. We don’t want to spend time going back and answering a lot of questions that, quite frankly, I don’t think people want answered.

I think the key here is that we are identifying an event or events in Han Solo’s life that gives you some idea of who he is and why he is the character we have all known to love. You can imagine, given who we’ve chosen to come in and direct, it should be very entertaining and funny. Han Solo is the character inside Star Wars that everybody knows has a wit and sense of humor. So that’s what this should be.”

And in one last bit of Star Wars news, Benicio Del Toro is very confident that he will be stepping out of rumor and into the light in the Star Wars Episode VIII.

Ok, I’ll move away from Star Wars now.

Frank Grillo (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) has confirmed that he has agreed to reprise his role in the next Purge movie. This comes as a surprise, mostly because the Purge franchise is told more as an anthology series. Grillo also leads the cast of a successful star series about an MMA Gym and the family that runs it. Kingdom’s first 10 episodes were great and I can’t wait for the next season to begin.

In some comic movie news, Ronda Rousey announced on Reddit that she wants to play Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel in the upcoming Marvel film. Now, I am a big fan of Rousey as a fighter and I have enjoyed the roles that she has played in a few films (Fast 7 / Expendables 3), but I don’t think that she can carry a film on her own.

Some sneaky set photos show a few shots of Black Panther on the Set of Captain America: Civil War

Lastly for this week, Lionsgate has released character breakdowns for the main cast of the upcoming Power Rangers film. The film, slated to be released on January 13th, 2017 looks to fill the roles of all of the primary 5 roles with the execption of the missing “Tommy”. Could this be an indication of the Green Ranger being the antagonist, or are they going to save that for a potential sequel?

Jason – A freshman quarterback and legend whose life came to a halt in a car accident. Now he’s a guy in need of redemption and will be leading this disparate group of teens to shed their individual baggage.

Kimberly – A former popular girl who is now unconventionally cool and has returned to school after an absence of 6 months boasting a new rebel-without-a-cause, edgy attitude that hides a deep and vulnerable secret.

Trini – The perpetual loner, mysterious, bright and always observant. All she wants is to find her gang of friends, but she’ll never admit it.

Billy – Slight and awkward, he’s smart and sweet but with no filter and limited social skills. Having never really had any friends, he instantly gravitates towards Jason.

Zack – The life of the party and filled with bravado and swagger, a tough and cool exterior full of confidence who secretly feels deeply inferior to all his peers due to his trailer park origins.
