The Gluten-Free Opinion #4 — So I’m Making A Game

After a few conversations, some encouraging words, and several drinks at Reset, I’ve come to the decision that my time is here, my time is now. There’s no easy way to say this — I don’t even think I’m ready for this — but let’s dive in and get crazy. I’m finally putting together all my resources, art, and imagination. That’s right, I am making a game.

I am equally excited, nervous, and terrified — and yet, oddly super-pumped and optimistic.

Over the past few months I’ve talked to some of the local talent in the indie game scene here in Manitoba, and I’ve been met with nothing but words of encouragement, high fives, and “Really man, why not?”

So, I’ve taken the first steps at making a game — let the Gods of old light shine upon us mercifully, as I don’t even know where this journey is going to take me. But that’s alright, life is all about taking risks and living for the moment. That’s why I’m taking on this crazy project … solo.

Yes, it sounds like a death wish for anyone that knows me personally, but I feel something like this should be solo the first time. I expect to hear three “Oh good God what is this”es for every “Wow, Steve made this” — we shall see.

So, the basics; my tools, skills and what I’ve done to get hyped, prepped and ready.

  • Program: I will be using RPG Maker MV, so yes, this will be the most action packed game your life will ever experience.
  • Art Direction: I will be doing all the art myself, in MS Paint to make this even more saucy. All characters will be hand-drawn, no pre-loaded heroes or sprites. 100% original content going into this game, aside from the tile sets.
  • Soundtrack: Lord help us all, as music is my only talent that I can’t do — prepare for some recorder and bag pipe solos. As much as I’d like to approach someone for help doing it, I feel like that’s a cop out and I need to learn how to do this solo. A lesson or two, yes, but it will have to be 100% me making it.
  • Narrative: The story is already 100% complete. All you need to know is that it will be glorious and bring pride to my family’s name.

So prepare yourself for this journey with me. I’ll be giving updates here and there, letting you know about my pains and struggles, what I’ve learned and failed and when this monstrosity of a game is set to release.

I thank you all in advance for your prayers and support, because God knows I need them.
