Epic Games announced this morning that Unreal Engine 4.8 will support SteamVR with the preview release coming out next week. The engine is available for free for anyone who wants to start developing for SteamVR.
Epic is taking VR seriously with Unreal Engine 4. Support for all of the upcoming VR platforms including Oculus Rift, Samsung Gear VR, Steam VR, Leap Motion and Project Morpheus has already been baked into the engine.
“Epic is once again taking a leadership position in the technology solution space by embracing the industry-wide momentum toward VR. With SteamVR integrated into its engine tech, Epic is making it that much easier for Unreal Engine developers to be successful.” – Gabe Newell, CEO Valve Corporation
There’s no denying that Epic has been providing tools to make some of the best looking games for a long time. With the inclusion of VR specific tech into the engine, this should help developers create visually stunning virtual experiences.
Epic will also be in attendance for the first Room-Scale Vive VR Jam happening in Austin Texas this May, where developers will get a chance to their creations on Vive headsets.
