It has been a long time coming, but the crowdfunded game Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is finally out! On top of the game’s release, there will be a limited edition version of the game released on December 27th called “Risky Beats.”
The “Risky Beats” edition of the game will feature a CD with 30 songs from the soundtrack. Jake Kaufman (Shovel Knight, DuckTales: Remastered) composed the soundtrack. If you have played any of the games he has worked on, you know that his compositions are fantastically varied.
Classically, the Shantae series has mainly been on handheld devices, dating back to the Gameboy Color. Shantae: Half-Genie Hero is the first game that was developed for home consoles. Developer Wayforward has always been known for their impressive sprite art and animation, but this game seems to take things to another level. As you can tell from the trailer, the game is delightfully colourful, and the characters animate beautifully.
In Shantae: Half-Genie Hero, the titular character must step up as the protector of Sequin Land once again to save it from the machinations of the crafty villain, Risky Boots. I have been playing the Shantae games since the first entry in the series. After the success of Shantae and the Pirate’s Curse from 2014, I am really excited to play Half-Genie Hero. The game is available on PS4, PS Vita, Wii U, Xbox One, and Steam for $19.99. The “Risky Beats” edition will be available for $29.99
